I’m Deborah Kane and I live in Fairfield, near Hitchin in Hertfordshire. If you’re a neighbour or fellow school-runner you might know me as Debbie or Deb – or just Bella and Tommy’s mum. I’m the one who takes an insanely big camera along to school plays and sports days when an iPhone really would have done. That just goes with the territory.

Photographing people was a serious hobby of mine for a long time before it became anything like a real business, but in 2007, after a lucky break at a family wedding and a lot of persuasion (incessant nagging) from a few very good friends, I began shooting weddings alongside my day job. I only managed two or three a year, but that was enough to convince me that I was good at it.

Then, in 2010, I started my family, moved out of London and suddenly had a bit more time on my hands, and everything snapped into place. Not as quickly as that makes it sound, though. Everything takes longer when you have kids. I couldn’t manage many weddings with my new home commitments, but family photography was the obvious next step – a result of suddenly knowing a lot of young families and suddenly understanding how to handle children – so I began photographing them as a way of taking time out from my own kids. Yes, to spend time with other people’s. I get the irony, but it’s a lot easier to laugh about it when the child acting up or climbing everything in sight is not your own.

It’s had to be a slow start, but as my little ones get bigger I’m gradually devoting more time to the photography, and now that I know first hand how quickly children change and how many of those moments you just want to hold onto forever I’ve become totally obsessed with preserving memories. Maybe every parent is.

I’m lucky enough to love what I do, and I hope that you’ll love what I do too – enough to call me again and again, when your children have grown a bit, or when there’s a new addition, or just because. I love nothing more than to get to know a family over a period of time, to watch people grow and change, and to be the one privileged enough to put all those things down in the memory bank.

Looking for something different?

Although my main business is family and wedding photography, from time to time I do accept other commissions or collaborate on projects with local businesses – it helps to keep things fresh. I am experienced in product photography (including recent jewellery ranges for Twisted Typist, Fingerprint Jewellery and Westlake Jewellery and textiles for Barker & Barker), some of which can be viewed here, and I have photographed several models for Eden Hair and Beauty, some of which can be seen here. I’m always happy to push the boundaries a little, so if you have a project you think I might be a good match for, I'd love to hear about it.
